Headline:

Persistent rain soon replaced by heavy showers spreading slowly northeast.

Today:

Breezy with widespread rain clearing to the north this morning. Briefly dry for a time, but still cloudy, as winds ease, before showers stagger slowly north-eastwards through this afternoon, occasionally prolonged, heavy and thundery, particularly over high ground. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Tonight:

Wet and cloudy with showers continuing to linger this evening. Becoming more settled overnight, with clear skies developing in places, though rather misty and rather foggy in rural parts. Minimum temperature 13 °C.

Thursday:

Early morning mist and fog lifting, giving occasional sunny spells, though light showers soon developing in the southwest and spreading inland through the afternoon. Winds remaining light. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Becoming cloudy and breezy on Friday, with heavy rain spreading eastwards overnight. Rain clearing on Saturday with light winds and further sunny spells, although turning wet once more on Sunday.

There is potential for a deep area of low pressure to pass over or close to the west/northwest of the UK early in this period, potentially bringing a spell of very strong winds and heavy rain, especially to parts of the north and west. Through next week, an oscillation between occasional spells of rain, most frequent in the northwest, with longer drier interludes in-between, is likely. It may be rather windy at times too, again especially in northern and western areas. Towards late October there are signs that, whilst northwestern areas may continue to see some rain at times, high pressure may become increasingly influential, potentially bringing more widely settled and drier conditions, with an increasing chance of overnight frost and fog.

High pressure may become more influential into early November, potentially providing longer spells of dry weather, but with the chance of overnight frost and fog becoming rather more widespread than in the days preceding this period. Some large fluctuations between daytime and night-time temperatures are possible, with relatively mild days where fog doesn't linger, and cold frosty nights. Towards mid-November, high pressure may become more focussed towards the northwest of the UK, allowing a gradual trend towards colder and perhaps more unsettled conditions, especially in more southern and eastern areas.
