Headline:

A dry day with sunny spells, especially in the north.

Today:

A dry day for most with plenty of sunny spells, especially across Cumbria. Southernmost parts of the region may remain largely cloudy with perhaps the odd spot of drizzle over the high ground. A cool feeling day, with light winds. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Staying largely dry. Clear spells, though cloud in the south slowly extending northwards across the region through the evening and overnight. Chilly, but not quite as cold as recent nights. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Tuesday:

A fairly cloudy day is expected, with limited sunshine. Some patchy light rain and drizzle possible over the hills. Turning increasingly breezy, with heavy rain arriving as we head overnight. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wet and breezy on Wednesday, with rain turning heavy at times. Brighter on Thursday, ahead of further wind and rain moving in from the west during Friday. Temperatures above average.

The unsettled spell of weather, which is expected to develop during this coming week, will continue into next weekend and beyond. All regions are likely to have some rain at times, which could be heavy. However, most of the rain, showers and strong winds are likely to be in the northwest with southeastern areas more often dry and bright. Temperatures will be above average and probably feeling warm in the brighter spells in southern areas. Later in October, there is a chance of more settled conditions developing, particularly in southern and eastern areas but with temperatures falling closer to average and some overnight frost and fog. Given the time of year, fog could be slow to clear.

Potentially some wet and windy weather at first, especially in the northwest, but a trend towards more settled conditions is most favoured for late October as high pressure becomes increasingly dominant. This would bring the potential for frost and fog at night, and possibly large variations between daytime and overnight temperatures. Into early November, high pressure may become more centred to the northwest of the UK, resulting in a gradual trend towards more unsettled conditions, particularly across southern regions.
