Our ocean forecasting scientists

  • Dr Andy Saulter

    Andy is the Head of the Ocean Forecasting Research and Development (OFRD) group and co-chair of the National Partnership for Ocean Prediction (NPOP).

  • Ana Aguiar

Ana develops the deep ocean configurations of the Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM).

  • Isabella Ascione

Isabella develops the Shelf Seas Forecasting configurations of the Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM), and is the Copernicus Marine service manager.

Chris develops WAVEWATCH and nearshore wave model configurations in support of Met Office operational marine forecast services.

  • Davi Carneiro

Davi works on data assimilation in marine systems

David develops marine biogeochemistry data assimilation systems.

Simon manages a team that develops the Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA) products and works to optimise the use of observations for ocean forecasting.

  • Susan Kay

Susan leads the marine biogeochemistry activity in the team, as well as a Plymouth Marine Laboratory scientist.

Gordon leads the deep ocean Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM) team.

Robert works on data assimilation in marine systems.

    Developing and maintaining the assimilation part of the FOAM (Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model) operational deep ocean forecasting system.

  • Dr Jian-Guo Li

Jian-Guo Li works on ocean surface wave spectral models and is especially interested in transport schemes on unstructured multi-resolution grids.

  • Dr Matt Martin

    Matt leads the research and development of marine data assimilation systems in the Met Office.

  • Niall McConnell

    Niall develops tools and methods for assessing the performance of ocean forecasts and assists users looking to exploit ocean forecasts.

  • Jan Maksymczuk

Jan leads the ocean forecasting verification team.

Chongyuan works on the OSTIA system and the validation of the OSTIA diurnal analysis

  • Dr Clare O'Neill

    Clare develops the UK's storm surge forecast model

  • Christine Pequignet

Christine works on the verification and validation of ocean models

  • Martin Price

Martin is responsible for software developments to the Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model and the NEMOVAR assimilation scheme

  • Jonah Roberts-Jones

Jonah develops the ocean component of the Coupled NWP system.

  • Dr Breogan Gomez

Breogan manages surge and wave model research into operations, delivering models that underpin short range forecasts for the marine sector, coastal flooding and the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service.

  • Toby Searle

Toby works on software related to the OSTIA system and observations processing for ocean forecasting.

Peter leads the shelf seas sediment modelling capability and works on the assessment and transition of operational ocean forecast systems.

    Jennie works on data assimilation into ocean models.

    James works on data assimilation in marine systems; of particular interest is data assimilation in shelf sea models and assimilation of diurnal sea surface temperature.

  • Kirsten Wilmer-Becker

    Kirsten coordinates the GODAE OceanView Program Office and leads the MyOcean Service Desk support group.

  • Mark Worsfold

Mark uses the OSTIA system to generate historical sea surface temperature datasets which can then be used by climate researchers. He also researches methods of detecting marine heatwaves.
