Defence services

In the context of the National Security Strategy, we support and enable the protection, security, independence and interests of the UK and its key allies at home and overseas. This is made possible by exploiting superior meteorological, oceanographic and climate science understanding to deliver optimum defence advantage on operations and in peacetime.

All of our operational services are underpinned by an in-depth understanding of atmospheric and oceanographic science, developed through decades of research. Weather can affect many military activities and has influenced the outcome of conflicts throughout history. It can have a significant impact on military capability from equipment design to mission planning, operational effectiveness and sensor and weapon performance. By working closely in partnership with UK and allied defence forces, we increase their ability to anticipate and respond to the dynamic impact of weather, enabling information superiority in the meteorological domain and providing a tactical edge in marginal battlefield conditions.

To achieve this purpose, we work within three integrated and mutually supporting themes focused on:

  • Supporting the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the UK military;
  • Working with UK's key allies, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the Five Eyes intelligence and defence community;
  • Applying our cutting-edge scientific and technical capabilities to develop mission support tools and delivery systems to assist military decision makers.
