Our science fellows
Met Office science fellows have been appointed on the basis of their scientific and technical achievements which have contributed significantly to delivering Met Office objectives, and are recognised nationally and internationally
Mike is working on the the dynamics of meridional overturning circulations and ocean heat uptake and the numerics of the NEMO ocean model. He is also Head of Learning and Development within Science.
Martin manages the research undertaken on land surface processes
Richard leads the climate impacts area, specialising in ecosystem-hydrology-climate interactions but also overseeing work on urban, health, industry and finance.
Mike leads a Met Office data assimilation research group and also works on theoretical atmospheric dynamics and nonlinear partial differential equations.
John undertakes research and development to improve exploitation of satellite data in numerical weather prediction and other applications in weather and climate.
Paul leads research into cloud microphysical processes
Brian researches to advance our forecasting capabilities of hazardous weather
Jonathan is a Research Fellow in climate change at the Met Office Hadley Centre.
Jim is engaged in measurement and modelling aerosols and their impacts on radiation, clouds, visibility and air-quality.
Helene is a Met Office Science Fellow and leads the Ocean Modelling group.
Chris leads research into the global carbon cycle and how it interacts with climate change. This helps governments determine carbon budgets and activities to tackle climate change.
Richard is a Science Fellow and manages work on generating and applying regional climate information and modelling systems with a focus on international development.
Lizzie is leading pioneering work to use very high resolution (km-scale) models for understanding future climate change. She leads a small team who are focussed on understanding the representation of high impact events such as extreme rainfall, sting jets and lightning at high resolution compared to conventional climate models, and the implications for future change.
Adrian leads the research and development of the parametrization of the atmospheric boundary layer.
Andrew leads some innovative research in Data Assimilation and Ensembles and advises Met Office research projects across a wide area.
Matt leads the research and development of marine data assimilation systems in the Met Office.
James is developing a strategy for seamless ensemble prediction across a range of time scales.
Roger leads Satellite Applications, developing the use of satellite data for assimilation into NWP models and imagery for forecasting, and promoting the use of satellites for climate monitoring.
Doug leads the decadal climate prediction research and development at the Met Office Hadley Centre.
Alison leads research into the representation of convection across model scales.
Peter is an expert in the attribution of climate change to anthropogenic and natural causes and leads the climate monitoring and attribution team.
David leads research in atmospheric turbulence and dispersion.
