Dr Dave Storkey
Dave works on the development and validation of the physical model in the FOAM ocean forecasting system.
Areas of expertise
- Ocean modelling.
- NEMO ocean model.
- Ocean forecast validation.
Current activities
Dave is a senior scientist responsible for the maintenance and development of the physical model at the heart of the FOAM ocean forecasting system. The old physical modelling code has recently been replaced with the NEMO ocean modelling framework and Dave has been involved in testing the NEMO code and building the new forecasting system around it.
Dave's work currently focuses on validating the new system. The assimilation scheme can be used to identify systematic biases in the physical model by looking at mean increments and short-term model drifts in the forecast after initialisation. This information can be used to direct further model development. Dave is also interested in process-based validation, looking at how well the model represents particular physical ocean processes such as currents and mixing.
Career background
Dave has been a member of the ocean forecasting group since he joined the Met Office in 1997. Since then he has worked on the development of the relocatable FOAM system and various aspects of the physical model, including advection schemes and open boundary conditions.
Before joining the Met Office, Dave completed a PhD in the theory of fluid turbulence in the Department of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.
