Current activities
Julia is currently working on the EU Horizon 2020 project, PRIMAVERA, on high resolution global climate modelling. Julia is looking into the ability of climate models to simulate wind storm damage over Europe, how wind storm damage relates to large scale atmospheric circulation indices such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, and wind storm variability in present and future climate. Previously, Julia worked on the CSSP-China project, assessing the skill of seasonal forecasts in predicting winter mean wind speeds over China, with potential use for the wind energy sector.
Career background
Julia joined the Met Office in 2011 in the Climate Impacts group. She worked on producing a freely available catalogue of damaging European Extreme Wind Storms (XWS), which has been widely used in the (re)insurance industry. In 2014 she spent a year on secondment to Applied Science, specialising in the development of meteorological data products for use in (re)insurance and risk management.
Before joining the Met Office, Julia worked as a post-doc at the Centro de Astrobiología (INTA-CSIC) in Madrid. She obtained her PhD on the study of low mass star formation from University College London, after receiving a first class degree in Natural Sciences (specialising in astrophysics) from the University of Cambridge.
