Current activities
Kate’s work in the Scientific Consultancy team has involved working on primarily government funded projects to assess the potential impacts of climate change on human systems and infrastructure. Kate is currently engaged in a "Review of Natural Hazards" project - an ETI-funded consortium project led by EDF R&D UK Centre. Kate’s role in this project has been to aid in analysing and interpreting the risks of extreme weather events on high-value UK energy infrastructure. Prior to this, Kate worked with the Climate Security team on an EU-funded collaborative research project HELIX (High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes), assessing the potential impacts of high-end climate change scenarios and extremes on food security in Bangladesh.
Career background
Kate joined the Met Office in September 2015 as part of the Applied Science Development team. Prior to this, she obtained her PhD in Biogeochemistry from the Open University, developing the use of trace elements in plankton as a proxy for environmental change. Previously, Kate acquired her MSc. Oceanography at the University of Southampton and BSc. (hons) Geology at the University of Durham, with a year at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
