Current activities
Martin works on a range of defence research programmes which aim to provide the necessary tools and advice to assist military decision-makers. He liaises closely with the military and Five Eyes community to ensure meteorological and oceanographic information superiority for the UK and its key allies.
Recent activities include:
- Research into optimal configurations of NWP models to support radar propagation predictions for the Royal Navy.
- Very high resolution NWP modelling for defence operations.
- Research into the impact of atmospheric turbulence on sensors operating in microwave, visible and infrared wavebands.
- Development of algorithms to improve underwater acoustic propagation forecasts.
Career background
Martin joined the Met Office in May 2013. Prior to this, he worked as an underwater battlespace scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. During this time he was responsible for providing operational support to UK fleet submarines.
He completed an MSc in Geophysics at the University of Alberta, Canada in 2010 and holds a first class MSci in Geophysics from the University of Leeds.
