Dr Nefeli Makrygianni
Nefeli is a Marine Scientist in the Marine Applications team, specialising in ocean wave model analysis.
Areas of expertise
- Ocean wave modelling
- Metocean applications
- Wind and wave prediction
- Air-sea interaction
- Model output and observations analysis
Current activities
Nefeli is a Scientist in the Marine Applications team. She is currently involved in multiple projects developing numerical techniques to enhance the quality of metocean forecasts used to support the offshore sector, and improve industry decision-making. These include the application of machine learning methods for bias correction and the classification of different partitioned sea-state parameters.
Career background
Nefeli joined the Met Office as a Marine Applications Scientist in April 2022.
Prior to that, Nefeli completed her PhD at Cardiff University. Her research was in collaboration with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and focused on the evaluation of the performance of the Wave Boundary Layer Model (WBLM) with the OpenIFS.
Nefeli obtained a MSc in Applied Geography and Spatial Planning: Geoinformatics from Harokopio University of Athens (March 2017). She also holds a second MSc in Applied Meteorology from University of Reading (December 2017). During her studies, Nefeli worked as an intern at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and The Cyprus Institute.
