Current activities
Simon manages the Post-Processing team which is part of the Verification, Impacts and Post-Processing team. The Post-Processing team focus on adding value to raw NWP data by integrating model forecasts with latest observations; by optimal generation of site-specific forecasts from gridded model fields; by correcting systematic errors using physical and statistical techniques and by developing tailored applications for specific customer areas (e.g. road maintenance, utilities companies).
Career background
Simon joined the Met Office in 1990 and has mostly worked on surface and boundary layer modelling. After a couple of years working on the Y2k bug, he returned to science. Since 2001 he has managed a team focused on developing forecasting products, which has evolved over time into the current Post-processing team.
Simon has an MSc in meteorology from the University of Reading and a BA in mathematics from Balliol College, Oxford
