Current activities
Stephen currently works as a Scientific Software Engineer and is focussed on creating a suite that combines various evaluation tools developed at the Met Office in to a user friendly system for evaluating the performance of Numerical Weather Prediction systems. He also helps maintain some Regional NWP Models to ensure they keep up to date with the latest operational science and technology.
Career background
Stephen graduated from the University of Manchester in 2009 with a degree in Physics before moving to the University of Warwick to study models of fusion plasma turbulence. His doctorate involved developing numerical simulations of reduced models of plasma physics and using them to research weakly turbulent wave interactions. After completing his PhD in 2013 Stephen joined the Applied Science team at the Met Office. Initially he helped to maintain the systems that produce weather forecasts to renewable energy customers before switching to focus on the software used to model road surface temperatures. In 2017 he moved to the Research to Operations team and started working on upgrading operational NWP forecasts.
