Current activities

John is an expert scientist developing data sets for applications in climate research and climate monitoring. John also monitors global climate putting recent changes into their long term context.

The current focus of John's work is developing bias adjustments for different types of historical sea surface temperature observations and evaluating the associated uncertainties. He is also interested in the techniques used to reconstruct climatological fields from incomplete observations.

Career background

John joined the Met Office in 2003.

External recognition

  • John is Co-chair of the WMO Commission for Climatology OPACE2 Expert Team on National Climate Monitoring Products, which is tasked with providing a set of standard reporting procedures for climate monitoring information produced by National Met Services.
  • John was scientific co-ordinator of the WMO annual statement on global climate in 2014.
