Organisations and reports

The Met Office is a global leader in climate science, founding the Met Office Hadley Centre for Climate Science and Services in 1990.

The Met Office Hadley Centre conducts world-leading research, providing guidance on the science of climate change. Our scientists work alongside international researchers from over 480 institutions and 113 countries outside of the UK.

We make significant contributions to scientific literature and a variety of climate science reports. Our work supports the assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nation’s body that evaluates climate change science.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental treaty, which commits state parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The UNFCCC has achieved the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the 2015 Paris Agreement, binding agreements on emissions and climate change.

UNFCCC members have met annually since 1995 at the Conference of the Parties (COP). Almost every country is represented, as members assess progress in meeting the UNFCCC’s objective. The Met Office is an active member of COP and the UNFCCC, proudly contributing to the global scientific community.
